What is a mechanical bearing?

Category: Industry News

Release time: 2022-12-27

Overview: At any time, whenever you have a mechanical process involving rotating or rolling components, you’ll need high-quality mechanical bearings and seals. Bearings are essential for enabling both rotational and linear motion within a device; they do so by minimizing friction and evenly distributing the stresses applied to the system—stresses that, in their absence, could otherwise lead to catastrophic system failures. Meanwhile, seals not only help retain the lubricant necessary for the bearings to function properly but also prevent harmful particles from entering the system and causing contamination.

  I. Types of Bearings You’ll Encounter

The two main types of friction-reducing bearings are ball bearings and roller bearings. Ball bearings are less common; they consist of solid spheres that rotate at very high speeds, but are suitable only for medium- or heavy-duty applications—ranging from large pumps and compressors to miniature servo motors.

Roller bearings are used more widely. These types of bearings feature a double-ring design with rolling elements that run within their raceways. They have the same envelope dimensions as ball bearings, but thanks to their larger surface contact area, they can handle higher radial load ratings.

II. How many subcategories are there for roller bearings?

  1. Cylindrical roller

These rollers make much deeper contact with the outer race than other types of roller bearings, and they can distribute the loads they bear over a wider surface area.

  2. Tapered roller

These rollers have narrower ends but exhibit a distinct all-around shape compared to other types of roller bearings.

  3. Needle roller

These needle rollers are similar to cylindrical needle rollers, but on average they are longer and wider.

  4. Symmetrical roller bearings

These rollers are self-aligning and have the same shape and size on all sides.

  5. Asymmetric roller bearing

Although these roller bearings are also self-aligning, the shapes and sizes on each side differ, making them asymmetrical.
