Causes of Motorcycle Bearing Failure

Category: Industry News

Release time: 2013-02-02

Overview: A detailed analysis of the causes of motorcycle bearing failures. Motorcycles are equipped with numerous bearings in various moving parts (such as the steering column, front and rear wheel hubs, rear sprocket, and rear reduction gear unit in finished vehicles), all of which are precision components. Bearings manufactured by reputable producers are typically inspected and certified as合格 at the factory; however, proper installation and usage are equally critical. During motorcycle operation, if issues such as the bearing ball retainer detaching, abnormal wear or spalling on the working surfaces within the raceway, or sluggish rotation occur, it is rarely due to inherent bearing quality problems—rather, these issues often stem from improper installation or usage. Below, we will analyze one by one the common problems that arise in various motorcycle components, to facilitate effective repairs.

Below, we will analyze one by one the common problems that arise in various motorcycle components, aiming to draw attention from both the repair industry and motorcycle owners, thereby helping them avoid unnecessary losses.

  Detailed analysis of each bearing:

  1. Bearings on the rear wheels of a completed vehicle.

Typically, after the vehicle is assembled, the shock absorbers are single-support type and can handle relatively large loads. If you don't slow down on poor road conditions, this can easily lead to excessive wear and shorten the service life. Also, be mindful that water can easily enter during car washing.

  2. Bearings on the front and rear hubs and the rear chainring.

Due to frequent exposure to deep water or regular car washes during daily use, water can seep into the bearings, gradually degrading the lubricant inside and causing severe wear on the bearing’s raceways and rolling elements, thereby significantly increasing the bearing’s clearance. If the front and rear wheels were initially fitted too tightly or too loosely at the factory or during sale, prolonged use may lead to unstable vehicle handling, bearing seizure, bearing play, damage or detachment of the ball retainer, and excessive clearance—resulting in friction between the brake disc and the wheel hub and increasing driving resistance. The bearings on the rear sprocket are particularly susceptible to water ingress and to being adjusted either too tightly or too loosely, both of which can cause damage. Therefore, vehicle owners should pay special attention when washing their cars or driving through deep puddles and promptly inspect and maintain these components. If replacement is necessary due to damage, ensure that the new parts are properly installed and adjusted so that the wheels rotate smoothly without any noticeable play.

  3. The crankshaft connecting-rod big-end and small-end roller bearings, as well as the ball bearings on both sides, tend to be more prone to damage in two-stroke engines.

The primary causes of damage to connecting-rod large roller bearings are poor oil quality or insufficient oil levels, as well as excessively high engine operating temperatures. These conditions intensify frictional heat, softening the bearing surfaces and accelerating premature fatigue and spalling on the working surfaces. The resulting spalled particles can get lodged in the steel cage of the bearing, causing operational resistance and hindering rotation. Moreover, the rollers exert abnormal loads on the cage, further exacerbating cage wear and eventually leading to cage fracture and breakage, which in turn results in the crankshaft and connecting rod becoming seized. In four-stroke engines, if the replaced oil is of inferior quality or has been used beyond its recommended service life, its lubrication performance deteriorates, intensifying wear and increasing the likelihood of impurities clogging the oil passages. Additionally, during new vehicle assembly or major overhauls, if the site is not sufficiently clean or if hard foreign objects carried by the tools used during alignment enter the bearing raceways, this can impede bearing rotation. Furthermore, misalignment during crankshaft press-fitting or improper positioning of the crankpins during installation can increase the load on the bearing, ultimately leading to its failure.

  4. Upper and lower bearings of the steering column

Due to failure of the front shock absorber, insufficient lubrication, or improper tightening force at the upper and lower parts, the ball bearings may break or their working surfaces may flake off, causing the handlebars to feel stiff or veer off course, thereby compromising driving safety.

In summary, bearing damage is primarily caused by factors such as inadequate lubrication, improper installation, improper clearance fit, and harsh operating environments. If these issues are not detected or repaired promptly, they could lead to significant losses or compromise driving safety.
